Preventative Health Maintenance Recommendations

Think about it.  Even family pets visit the vet once a year for an annual exam! 

And, for annual exams, there's no better time than the summer months.  The days are longer, schools out, and your schedule is not as hectic. Contact your primary care provider today to schedule your annual exam! 

The following information is as recommended by the United States Preventative Services Task Force.  Not all services recommended by the USPSTF will be included in all benefit plans.  You should contact the customer service department of your insurance provider to verify coverage.

Birth to 10 Years
• 2, 4, 6, 9, 12/13, 18, 24 months, then yearly.
• Recommended Vaccination Schedule.

Ages 11-24 Years
• Annual Physical Exam.
• Routine Depression Screening.
• Total blood cholesterol (TC) and High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) routine screening for younger adults if they have other risk factors for coronary heart disease.  (Men ages 20 to 35 and Women ages 20 to 45)
• Pap test (females). If sexually active at present or in past (at least every 3 years).
• Chlamydia screen if sexually active (females less than age 25) and other asymptomatic women at increased risk for infection. Risk factors for Chlamydia include having multiple sex partners, having had an STD in the past, and not using condoms consistently and correctly.
• Rubella (German measles) or immunization history (females over age 12).
• Syphilis screen for those at risk.
• Recommended Vaccination Schedule.

Ages 25-64
• Annual Physical Exam.
• Routine depression screening.
• Total blood cholesterol (TC) and High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).  Routine screening for Men ages 35 and older and Women ages 45 and older.  A routine screening for younger adults is recommended if they have other risk factors for coronary heart disease such as tobacco use, diabetes, family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
• Pap test (females). If sexually active at present or in past (Recommendation is at least every 3 years.  Discuss frequency with your physician)
• Chlamydia screen if sexually active and at an increased risk for infection. Risk factors for Chlamydia include having multiple sex partners, having had an STD in the past, and not using condoms consistently and correctly.
• Mammogram every 1-2 years (women ages 40 years and older) with or without clinical breast exam.  Discuss with your doctor.
• Rubella (German Measles) or vaccination history (women of childbearing age).
• Osteoporosis screening for women (60 years and older) at an increased osteoporotic fracture risk.
• Syphilis screen for those at risk.
• PSA levels annually on men over 50.
• Colorectal screening baseline at age 50: fecal occult blood test annually; colonoscopy every 10 years; flex sigmoid every 5 years; double contrast barium enema every 5 years; or more often if family history or clinical symptoms.

Age 65 and Older
• Annual Physical Exam.
• Vision screening.
• Hearing impairment.
• Assessment for problem drinking.
• Routine depression screening.
• Total blood cholesterol (TC) and High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) routine screening.   
• Fecal occult blood test (annually) and/or sigmoidoscopy.
• Mammogram with or without clinical breast exam every 1-2 years. Discuss with your doctor.
• Routine osteoporosis screening for women.
• Papanicolaou (Pap) test (women) routine screening not recommended.
• Syphilis screen for those at risk.
• Influenza Vaccine (annually).
• Pneumonia Vaccine (one dose).

Pregnant Women
• Hemoglobin/hematocrit.
• Hepatitis B.  
• Blood screening for sexually-transmitted disease.
• Chlamydia screen (<25 yr) and other pregnant women at an increased risk for infection. Risk factors for Chlamydia include having multiple sex partners, having had an STD in the past, and not using condoms consistently and correctly.
• Rubella (German measles) or vaccination history.
• Rh blood typing.
• Screening for inherited blood diseases, if indicated.
• Screening for genetic disorders, if indicated.
• HIV screening, if indicated.
• Syphilis screen for those at risk.
• Urine culture (12-16 weeks into pregnancy).
• Screening for inherited blood diseases, if indicated.
• May offer serum AFP screening.
