Getting started with a kidney-friendly diet

When your kidneys are not functioning normally, your body can’t filter fluids and waste effectively. In addition to advancing kidney disease, waste buildup in your body can create heart, lung and other health problems. Nutrition is part of an overall treatment plan to delay progression of kidney disease and keep you feeling your best.

It is important to work with your doctor and/or nutritionist on a kidney-friendly diet. Your nephrologist may recommend limiting sodium, potassium, phosphorus and certain fluids. How strict your diet is depends on your stage of kidney disease. Thus, recipes may need to be altered to meet your individual needs. Below are a few recipe resources that may be helpful as you start your journey to healthy eating with kidney disease.
