9 Tips for Choosing a Health Plan During Open Enrollment Season
The Medicare landscape includes a wide range of choices. With so much to consider, it’s important to understand your options and choose a plan that fits your health needs and budget. The best time to do this is during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), October 15 – December 7.
This is when you can select or switch your health insurance plan. Reviewing your current coverage—or exploring new options if you’re new to Medicare—is essential, as benefits, costs, and provider networks can change each year.
Here are nine tips to help guide your decision:
1. Review your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) early.
ANOC letters are typically sent in September or early October and outline any changes to your plan for the upcoming year. Reviewing this early helps you decide if your current plan still meets your needs.
2. Understand your options.
Compare plans carefully, including benefits, services, and costs. Make sure you understand the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.
3. Check your prescription coverage.
Consider your medication needs and whether generics are acceptable. Review drug coverage carefully, as Original Medicare does not typically include prescription coverage. A Part D plan or Medicare Advantage plan may help manage these costs.
4. Anticipate next year’s health needs.
If you expect major medical care, such as surgery, compare plans based on coverage and out-of-pocket limits.
5. Understand out-of-pocket costs.
Review premiums, deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Knowing these details can help you avoid unexpected expenses.
6. Consider virtual care options.
Some plans include telehealth services, allowing you to connect with providers remotely. Medicare Part B covers certain virtual visits.
7. Check mental health coverage.
Ensure your plan includes access to mental health services, including in-person and virtual care options.
8. Look into wellness programs.
Many plans offer wellness benefits such as fitness memberships or incentives for healthy activities.
9. Consider additional benefits.
Dental, vision, and hearing coverage are not typically included in Original Medicare but may be offered through Medicare Advantage plans. Evaluating these benefits can support your overall health and well-being.
