Holston Valley Medical Center is embarking on a multimillion-dollar redevelopment initiative that will significantly improve patient access to the region’s largest hospital. Leaders from Holston Valley, HMG and the City of Kingsport gathered today on the former Kings-Giant Plaza property to announce the construction of a new entrance to Holston Valley that will allow patients to enter the hospital from Stone Drive – HMG Medical Plaza.
Officials also announced the construction of two additional medical office buildings on the Kings-Giant site, which is already home to the Holston Valley Outpatient Center and a physicians’ building.
“Last year, we announced Project Platinum, the $100 million renovation and expansion of our hospital campus,” said Bert Whitaker, Holston Valley’s president. “The development plans we’re announcing today are a significant component of that project.”
“Access to our facility has always been one of our biggest challenges. By building a new entrance and connecting our inpatient and outpatient campuses, we’re making it easy for patients to conveniently access the health care they need.”
The new entrance to Holston Valley will begin on Stone Drive and continue across the current site of the Kingsport Boys and Girls Club to the hospital. Wellmont Health System purchased the Boys and Girls Club property earlier this year to facilitate the development of the new entrance.
Construction of the new Holston Valley entrance is planned to coincide with improvements the city is undertaking to Clinchfield and Gibson Mill roads. The tree-lined entrance will feature easy-to-understand signage and premium lighting that will help hospital patients and visitors better access the campus.
“This project is a win for our patients and a win for the residents of the neighborhoods that surround Holston Valley,” said Blaine Douglas, Wellmont’s chief operating officer. “With the construction of a new entrance to the campus, we’re making it easier for patients to get to our facility, and we’re redirecting traffic off of residential streets to make the surrounding neighborhoods safer.”
In addition to the new entrance, Wellmont will construct a 72,000-square-foot medical office building on the Kings-Giant property. The building will provide space for physicians’ offices and outpatient services.
A second medical office building will be built on the site by HMG.

The multi-story, 100,000-square-foot Holston Medical Group medical facility is slated to house both HMG family practice offices as well as HMG specialty physician offices. The new facility, offering the patient convenience of its award-winning MeadowView Lane Professional Center, will serve to consolidate several existing HMG locations and provide the opportunity for growth and expansion.
Construction on the new entrance and the two medical office buildings will begin this summer. The new buildings should be completed by the fall of 2007, and the opening of the new entrance to Holston Valley will coincide with the completion of the other major components of Project Platinum in the summer of 2008.
